Much further north than the known and common places for orca observation, there is a meeting point of orcas and humpback whales. The Island of Senja is our point of interest which is located about 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Large schools of herrings enter the fjords where orcas, humpback whales, other whales and and sea eagles follow them. This is a particularly special spectacle for photographers because at this time of the year the northern lights make a fantastic setting. Sensational news is the possibility to snorkel with orcas and humpback whales. On stormy days when boat tours are not possible you depart for safaris onshore to take pictures of breath taking landscapes, birds and mammals.

"This is a well kept secret of nature"

The tour is guided by Frank Wirth and the professional wildlife photographer and Norwegians award winning Canon Ambassador Anders Hanssen. Together with his family he lives at Senja Island. You participate in photo courses to learn how to take pictures of aurora borealis.

It’s a small group size: Only two groups with maximum ten persons are allowed at each departure. A semi ridged boat (type Princess with 43 foot) and a power rubber boat are provided which are perfect for the tours at the ocean.

DAY 2/DAY 8 – Daily Programme

Depending on the weather situation you depart to the sea in the morning hours to observe orcas and humpback whales. A real highlight is snorkelling with orcas and humpback whales. Only four participants per boat are permitted. Snorkelling equipment and snorkelling suits are not provided and have to be brought from home. 2015 WOW made a movie together with BBC for the production Blue Planet Ocean. Feeding orcas in schools of herring were filmed. It turned out that the visibility range are surprisingly good.

If the sea is too stormy you search for birds, elks and reindeers by car. Of course stops for landscape photography are included. In the evenings you can take part in a photo course where you learn how take pictures of the northern lights.

A typical day at Senja could be:

09:00 am Breakfast at the apartment
10:00 am Departure for whale watching, snorkelling with whales or safari onshore.
14:00 pm Drive back and short warm up in your apartment. The afternoon can be used to download pictures and to prepare for the photo course in the evening.
19:00 pm Meet the group for a presentation of Anders Hanssen to talk about the shots of the day.
20:00 pm Dinner
21:00 pm Northern light photography (weather permitting).

General Notes

In dealing with the whales we only work according to international codes of ethics. As a basic principle safety for people and animals comes first. All our tours depend on the weather. Consequently sometimes our movements are limited, for example when it is extremely rough and we can only operate in wind-shaded bays. We cannot guarantee sightings nor give evidence about the quantity of the sightings. The whales arrive because of the herrings and whether they come or not cannot be guaranteed. However, we will try our best to get you to the regions where the whales are located. This can be done either by boat or on land. With our carefully chosen bases we create the ideal conditions for successful sightings.
