Orca and humpback whale camp

Orca and humpback whale camp in Norway

Photo tour, snorkelling and diving with orcas and humpback whales

After the great success of the WOW expedition to Norway in November 2015, we operate a six week orca camp in Norway from November 2016. Thereby a part of our experienced boat crew will be transferred from Pico to Norway. There, at about 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle we have an ideal location for whale watching.

This tour is extendable by Short programs and activities from Tromsø.

Your accommodation is right in the fjords where millions of herrings arrive at the end of October. The shoal is accompanied by orcas, humpback whales and lots of fish as the herrings serve as a huge food source – so the great feast can start! The orcas and humpback whale camp will follow the herring during their migration in Norway. This is why after four weeks we leave our camp in Kvaløyvågen and move about 100 kilometres southwards to the Island of Sommarøy. There we stay until the middle of December before darkness covers the complete area. In January we again follow the herrings southwards to Senja Island.

What happens in the fjords of northern Norway is barely describable. On some days during the last tour more than 200 orcas and 100 humpback whales could be observed! In front of the harbour mole of the accommodation there were ten humpback whales which jumped out of the water during the bubblenet feeding directly in front of their “audience”. They were accompanied by thousands of herrings which tried to escape. The whole group was surrounded by 30 orcas because both whale species cooperate here for hunting. Together with the clear nights under the burning sky and the northern light you literarily feel like being at another planet.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Tromsø

You are welcomed by your driver at the airport of Tromsø. Transfer to your apartment at Kvaløyvågen or at Sommarøy Island according to the travel date.

Day 2-7: Daily programme

Depending on the travel date you stay either in Kvaløyvågen or at the Island of Sommarøy. The daily excursions start from your accommodation respectively. Kvaløyvågen is situated at the mainland directly at a fjord. The whales can alreadybe observed from the veranda. During the travel dates at Sommarøy the sun does not reach the horizon anymore , twilight prevails from around 22.11. to 15.01 and gives your pictures a very special spirit. At the island you also live close to the sea, so that whales can be observed from the house. At Sommarøy a family tour with St. Nicolas, northern light and dog sledge tour is planned as well.

Depending on the weather situation you depart to the sea in the morning hours to observe orcas and humpback whales. You can chose between the following activities:

Intensive whale watching

A maximum of four people per boat drive to the sea together with an experienced skipper. Often the boat meets the giants only after a few minutes. You return at nightfall which means after approximately three to four hours at the ocean. During short breaks you have the possibility to fish fresh fish for dinner.

Snorkelling with whales and Underwater photography

Northern Light Photography

At this time of the year, every day from around 4 pm total darkness covers the north of Norway. When the sky is clear you have the chance to see the northern light. Sometimes the sky is literarily burning. Then you should set your camera and tripod and be prepared for the perfect shot. On some days spectacular pictures can be taken from the veranda. On other days you search outside the hotel for the ideal photo location. Time lapses can be very exciting as well. Just leave the camera running for two or three hours and watch the results.

Optional activities

In case the ocean is too rough and we cannot realize a boat tour, there is a wide range of optional activities (read more). Those activities can also be booked on free afternoons.

"Our Orca observations are very individual. We use small boats with max 4 passengers what is perfect for photographers. "

General notes

In dealing with the whales we only work according to international codes of ethics. As a basic principle safety for people and animals comes first. All our tours depend on the weather. Consequently sometimes our movements are limited, for example when it is extremely rough and we can only operate in wind-shaded bays. We cannot guarantee sightings nor give evidence about the quantity of the sightings. The whales arrive because of the herrings and whether they come or not cannot be guaranteed. However, we will try our best to get you to the regions where the whales are located. This can be done either by boat or on land. With our carefully chosen bases we create the ideal conditions for successful sightings.
