Photo tour to Malaysia and Indonesia

Photo tour to Malaysia and Indonesia

Accompany us to a 15-day-journey through the pristine nature of Malaysia and Indonesia off the beaten track. Observe orangutans, proboscis monkeys and sun bears in the tropical rainforest of Borneo. Discover the breath-taking aquatic realm at the shores of the island Flores and take formidable pictures of Komodo dragons at Rinca, the neighbour island of Komodo. The small group size of a maximum of twelve participants and the expert German- and English-speaking tour guide allow a very close contact to the nature. There is enough time at each of the locations, so that spectacular photos can be taken.

Day 1: Arrival at Malaysia at the island of Borneo

Reception at the airport Sandakan in the afternoon. The city Sandakan is the second biggest city of the Malaysian federal state Sabah, which is located in the north of Borneo. Approximately two-hours transfer from the airport to your lodge. The Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge opened in 1994 and lies in the middle of the rain forest at the shore of Kinabatangan river which flows into the Sulu Sea at Sandakan. Overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. (D)

Day 2: Orangutans and sun bears at Sepilok

Arrival at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in the morning. After a short walk across a planked path through the rain forest you reach the observation point. During the daily feeding which starts at 10:00 am you have the rare opportunity to watch the animals at close range. After this first contact with the orangutans you visit the newly founded Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre which is located next to the rehabilitation centre of the orangutans. At the sun bear centre, animals which are rescued from captivity or found wounded in the woods, are nourished and prepared for a later release back into the wild. Sun bears are the smallest representatives of their species and are in danger of extinction. You spend the rest of the day in the rehabilitation centre before you return to the lodge in the evening. After dinner you take part in a night hike along the planked path in the forest behind the lodge. Overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 3: Proboscis monkeys and other animals in the rain forest

Drive to the landing stage at Sandakan. There your boat excursion starts in the early midday which takes you along Sulu Sea and the fascinating scenery of the mangrove woods to the village of Abai. During the tour you search for the endemic proboscis monkeys, also known as long-nosed monkeys, birds and other wild animals. You have lunch at Abai Jungle Restaurant before you continue with the programme in the later afternoon. In the boat you again look for the animals of the tropical rainforest and experience after sun set how the fire flies turn the mangroves into Christmas trees. Overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 4: Boat excursion at Mananggul river

Early in the morning you take the boat to drive to Pitas Lake – an oxbow lake – to observe the animals which are active in the morning. Later you have the possibility to contribute to a conservation project by planting a tree. Today, you take lunch together with the villagers. In the afternoon you ride along the species-rich Mananggul river to the village Sukau. Overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 5: Flight from Malaysia to Indonesia

After breakfast it is time to say goodbye from your lodge in the rainforest. After approximately two and a half hours by boat you arrive at Sandakan. Transfer to the airport after lunch. You fly from Sandakan via Kotakinabalu and Jakarta to the island Bali at Indonesia. Overnight in a hotel close to the airport. (B/L/D)

Day 6: Flight to the island Flores and snorkelling tour

Flight from Denpasar at Bali to Labuan Bajo at the island of Flores. Transfer to the lodge which is directly located at the beach. In the afternoon a first snorkelling tour is planned. Overnight at Bajo Komodo Eco Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 7 – 8: Komodo dragons at the island of Rinca

Boat drive to the island of Rinca to take pictures of Komodo dragons. Rinca is THE insider’s tip, because in contrast to Komodo, cruise ships do not land at Rinca which means that there are far less tourists visiting the island. The amount of monitor lizards that live here equals the amount that can be found at the neighbouring island Komodo. However, Rinca is much smaller which means that here, the density of Komodo dragons is much higher. One afternoon you again discover the marine world during a snorkelling excursion. Overnight at Bajo Komodo Eco Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 9: Flight to Java

Transfer to the airport for your flight from Flores via Bali to Jakarta at the island of Java. Overnight in a hotel close to the airport. (B/L/D)

Day 10: Flight to Kalimantan

You again fly to Borneo, this time to the Indonesian part Kalimantan. From the airport Pangkalan Bun you drive to Kumai where a boat takes the group along the Sekonyer River deep into the rainforest. In the afternoon you arrive at your lodge, the starting point for the following days. Overnight at Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 11 – 14: Orangutans at Tanjung Puting National Park

Tanjung Puting National Park is home to nine of 13 species of primates which can be found in Borneo and is the biggest protected swamp-rainforest region in Southeast Asia. 28 other kinds of mammals live here, among them sambar deers and clouded leopards. These cats of prey can only be observed rarely. The following days you observe long-nosed monkeys, orangutans and all the other creatures in the national park. With a little bit of luck the group receives an appointment in one of the rehabilitation centres of Dr. Biruté Galdikas. One day you hike to the breeding grounds of the endemic fresh water crocodiles, the false gavials. Overnight at Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 15: Farewell from Indonesia

Today you bid farewell from the tropical rainforest. Transfer to the airport Pangkalan Bun and flight via Denpasar to Europe.
