Ethiopia by Air and Simien Mountains
Explore Ethiopia by air in nine days! Fly from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar to Gondar. Drive to Simien Mountains National Park to observe the endemic Gelada baboons. Back in Gondar you continue by air to Lalibela to Axum and from there back to Addis Ababa. Explore the unique cultural sites, the fantastic landscape and endemic fauna of the hidden treasure of Africa.

DAY 1: Arrival at Addis Ababa
In the morning you arrive in Addis Ababa. In the afternoon you have a city tour of Addis that includes the National Museum, Merkato (the largest open air market in Africa) and Entoto Mountain for the panoramic view of the city on top of driving along main streets of the city. DAY 2: Blue Nile Falls and Ura Kidane Mihret
Fly from Addis to Bahir Dar, after check in to your hotel drive 32 km to visit the remarkable Blue Nile Falls and in the afternoon make an admirable boat trip on Lake Tana to visit the monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret. Overnight at Jacaranda Hotel*** / Ethio-Star Hotel**.
Day 3: Gondar
Fly from Bahir Dar to Gondar where you visit the 17th century castles of Gondar, the open air bath of Emperor Fasiledes and the famous church of Debre Birhan Silassie (Light of Trinity) with wonderful murals. Overnight at Goha Hotel*** / Lammergeyer Hotel**.
Day 4: Simien Mountains
Drive to Simien Mountains National Park up to Sankaber (the first campsite of the park) to see the extraordinary scenery of the mountains. Walk around Sankaber enjoying the endemic Gelada Baboons and the bone breaking giant bird lammergeier. Overnight at Simien Lodge*** / Sora Hotel Debark*.
Day 5: Gondar
Drive from Debark to Gondar with stops at different sites for excellent sceneries. Enjoy the rest of the day in Gondar. Overnight at Goha Hotel*** / Lammergeyer Hotel**.
Day 6: Lalibela
Fly from Gondar to Lalibela and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon visit of the first cluster of the 12th and 13th century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela which are considered by many as the 8th wonder of the world. This tour takes approximately three hours and is certainly one of the most impressive sights you may have ever seen. Overnight at Cliff Edge Hotel*** / Alef Hotel**.
Day 7: Asheten Mariam
Wake up early for a 07:00 am mule ride up to the monastery of Asheten Mariam. This fantastic activity takes you high up onto an escarpment above the town where you not only see the amazing rock-hewn church but where you have also one of the best views in Ethiopia. After lunch visit the second and third clusters of the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Overnight at Cliff Edge Hotel*** / Alef Hotel**.
Day 8: Axum
Fly from Lalibela to Axum and transfer to hotel. After a short break you go on sight-seeing tour, starting with the palace and tomb of King Caleb (6th C, AD), the extraordinary stele field (World Heritage Site) and tomb of King Ramhai (1st to 4th C, AD), followed by a trip to the church of St Mary of Tsion, (17th C, AD) in which is deposited the Ark of Covenant and continue to visit the palace of the Queen of Sheba (date unknown, some say 7th C, AD, others 10th C, BC). Finish the day by wandering through the small but excellent museum. Overnight at Sabean Hotel*** / Africa Hotel*.
Day 9: Addis
Fly from Axum to Addis Ababa. The afternoon is at leisure. In the evening you are taken to a traditional restaurant for an Ethiopian dinner with folkloric dances and coffee ceremony. After dinner transfer to the airport for your departure flight.Top

Extension 1 – Rift Valley Lakes (2 nights / 3 days)
Day 9: Awassa
Fly from Axum to Addis and drive to Awassa visiting the Rift Valley lake of Bishoftu at Debre Zeit and Lake Ziway to admire the different species of birds. After check in to your hotel enjoy walking along the shores of Lake Awassa to enjoy more of the aquatic birds and the natural beauty of the area on top of the unforgettable sunset at the end of the day. Overnight at Tadesse Enjori Hotel*** / Gebre Kirstos Hotel*.
Day 10: Lake Langano
Drive from Awassa to Lake Langano visiting the Abijata-Shalla-Lakes National Park for an interesting bird watching experience. In Langano enjoy swimming in the lake and leisure time for the rest of the day. Overnight at Sabana Beach Resort*** / Wabe Shebelle Hotel*.
Day 11: Addis Ababa
After taking some time in the beautiful area of Langano drive back to Addis. In the evening you are taken to a traditional restaurant for an Ethiopian dinner with folkloric dances and coffee ceremony. After dinner transfer to the airport for your departure flight.Top
Extension 2 – Awash NP and Harar (3 nights / 4 days)
Day 9: Awash NP
Fly from Axum to Addis and drive to Awash National Park visiting the Rift Valley lake of Bishoftu at Debre Zeit. After check in to your hotel game drives at the park and visit of the famous Awash Falls. Overnight at Awash Falls Lodge*** / Genet Hotel**.
Day 10: Harar
Drive from Awash to Harar through the scenic Haraghe Mountains watching the coffee and chai plantations left and right of the road. In the evening visit of one of the gates of the Harar wall to see the hyena man feeding his hyena friends. Overnight at Harar Ras Hotel** / Belayneh Hotel*.
Day 11: Harar
Full day visit of Harar which includes the colorful Islamic market, the National Museum and Harari Museum, the house of Ras Mekonen (father of Haile Silassie), a typical Harari house, the 16th century wall of Harar and the house of the renowned poet Arthur Rimbaud. Around the end of the day drive from Harar to Dire Dawa. Overnight at Samrat Hotel*** / Ras Hotel*.
Day 12: Addis
Drive or fly from Dire Dawa to Addis. In the evening you are taken to a traditional restaurant for an Ethiopian dinner with folkloric dances and coffee ceremony. After dinner transfer to the airport for your departure flight.Top
