Ethiopia by Land
This tour includes all of Ethiopia’s highlights in only twelve days: Drive from Addis Abeba to Debre Markos to Bahir Dar to Gondar to Semien Mountains National Park to Axum to Mekele to Lalibela to Kombolcha and back to Addis Abeba. This tour embraces everything from churches and monasteries to Gelada baboons and the raptors Lammergeyer to fantastic nature such as Blue Nile Fallls and Lasta Mountains.
This tour is extendable by:

Day 1: Arrival at Addis Ababa
In the morning you arrive in Addis Ababa. In the afternoon you have a city tour of Addis that includes the National Museum, Merkato (the largest open air market in Africa) and Entoto Mountain for the panoramic view of the city on top of driving along main streets of the city. Overnight at Nexus Hotel ****/Panorama Hotel ***.
Day 2: Debre Libanos and Blue Nile Gorge
Drive to Debre Markos to visit the 13th century monastery of Debre Libanos as well as the Blue Nile Gorge. Overnight at Guzamen Hotel***/Shebel Hotel*.
Day 3: Lake Tana and Ura Kidane Mihret Monastery
Continue to Bahir Dar. In the afternoon boat trip on Lake Tana to see Ura Kidane Mihret Monastery. Overnight at Jacaranda Hotel***/Ethio-Star Hotel**.
Day 4: Blue Nile Falls and Gondar
Early morning drive to the gorgeous Blue Nile Falls. From Bahir Dar you continue to Gondar. Upon arrival you visit the 17th century castles, Bath of Fasiledes and Debre Birhan Silassie Church. Overnight at Goha Hotel***/Lammergeyer Hotel**.
Day 5: Simien Mountains NP
Drive to Simien Mountains National Park up to Sankaber (the first campsite of the park) to see the extraordinary scenery of the mountains. Walk around Sankaber enjoying the endemic Gelada Baboons and the bone breaking giant bird lammergeier. Overnight at Simien Lodge***/Sora Hotel Debark*.
Day 6: Axum
Drive to Axum through the breath taking scenic land of the Simien Mountains. The tour takes you down the Limalimo mountain belt to the Tekeze lowlands. From there you can see the Simien Mountains upwards to admire the gifts of nature. Overnight at Sabean Hotel***/Africa Hotel*.
Day 7: King Caleb tomb
After breakfast you go on a full day sight-seeing tour, starting with the palace and tomb of King Caleb (6th C, AD), the extraordinary stele field (World Heritage Site) and tomb of King Ramhai (1st to 4th C, AD), followed by a trip to the church of St Mary of Tsion, (17th C, AD) in which is deposited the Ark of Covenant and continue to visit the palace of the Queen of Sheba (date unknown, some say 7th C, AD, others 10th C, BC). Finish the day by wandering through the small but excellent museum. Overnight at Sabean Hotel ***/Africa Hotel *.
Day 8: Yeha and Mekele
Start today’s adventure by driving from Axum to Mekele with a stop at Yeha to visit the 5th century BC Moon Temple and adjacent to it the 6th century Church of Aba Aftse. After another short drive visit of the 4th century BC Wukro Cherkos Church and then a brief stop at Negash Mosque– the first settlement of Muslims in Ethiopia. Overnight at Axum Hotel/Yohannes IV Hotel**.
Day 9: Lalibela and Lasta Maountains
After breakfast drive from Mekele to Lalibela enjoying the scenery of the Lasta Mountains. Overnight at Cliff Edge Hotel ***/Alef Hotel **.
Day 10: Lalibela
In the morning visit of the first and second clusters of the 12th and 13th century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela which are considered by many as the 8th wonder of the world. After lunch visit the third cluster of the rock-hewn churches. These are certainly one of the most impressive sights you may have ever seen. Overnight at Cliff Edge Hotel ***/Alef Hotel **.
Day 11: Kombolcha
Drive from Lalibela to Kombolcha through scenic land. Overnight at Sunnyside Hotel***/Tekle Hotel*.
Day 12: Addis Ababa
Drive back to Addis Ababa crossing the Tarma Ber tunnel. On the way you have a magnificent view of the Rift Valley. In the evening you are taken to a traditional restaurant for an Ethiopian dinner with folkloric dances and coffee ceremony. After dinner transfer to the airport for your departure flight.

Extension 1 – Rift Valley Lakes (2 nights / 3 days)
Day 13: Awassa
Drive from Addis Ababa to Awassa visiting the Rift Valley lake of Bishoftu at Debre Zeit and Lake Ziway to admire the different species of birds. After check in to your hotel enjoy walking along the shores of Lake Awassa to enjoy more of the aquatic birds and the natural beauty of the area on top of the unforgettable sunset at the end of the day. Overnight at Tadesse Enjori Hotel ***/Gebre Kirstos Hotel *.
Day 14: Lake Langano
Drive from Awassa to Lake Langano visiting the Abijata-Shalla-Lakes National Park for an interesting bird watching experience. In Langano enjoy swimming in the lake and leisure time for the rest of the day. Overnight at Sabana Beach Resort ***/Wabe Shebelle Hotel *.
Day 15: Addis
After taking some time in the beautiful area of Langano drive back to Addis. In the evening you are taken to a traditional restaurant for an Ethiopian dinner with folkloric dances and coffee ceremony. After dinner transfer to the airport for your departure flight.Top
Extension 2 – Awash NP and Harar (3 nights / 4 days)
Day 12: Awash National Park
Drive from Addis to Awash National Park visiting the Rift Valley lake of Bishoftu at Debre Zeit. After check in to your hotel game drives at the park and visit of the famous Awash Falls. Overnight at Awash Falls Lodge ***/Genet Hotel **.
Day 14: Harar
Drive from Awash to Harar through the scenic Haraghe Mountains watching the coffee and chai plantations left and right of the road. In the evening visit of one of the gates of the Harar wall to see the hyena man feeding his hyena friends. Overnight at Harar Ras Hotel **/Belayneh Hotel *.
Day 15: Harar
Full day visit of Harar which includes the colorful Islamic market, the National Museum and Harari Museum, the house of Ras Mekonen (father of Haile Silassie), a typical Harari house, the 16th century wall of Harar and the house of the renowned poet Arthur Rimbaud. Around the end of the day drive from Harar to Dire Dawa. Overnight at Samrat Hotel ***/Ras Hotel *.
Day 16: Addis
Drive or fly from Dire Dawa to Addis. In the evening you are taken to a traditional restaurant for an Ethiopian dinner with folkloric dances and coffee ceremony. After dinner transfer to the airport for your departure flight.Top
